![]() Under load, I saw the fan rev up to 1,342rpm, which was still near whisper quiet.Īnother feature that makes the Founders Edition different is its removable low-profile backplate, which is useful for snug SLI configurations. The two-slot card’s radial blower fan is also aided by Nvidia’s vapor chamber cooler. What makes the Founders Edition stand out? For starters, the 4.3x10.5-inch chassis uses a die-cast aluminum body. For what it's worth, personally I find the card’s jagged edges look pretty sharp. ![]() The extra $100 is merely for the superior materials and craftsmanship. Having said that, the Founders Edition graphics card does not use a higher-quality binned GPU. So it has revamped its own design by using higher-quality materials that will no doubt resonate with the most devoted enthusiasts. While previous iterations from Nvidia were known as “reference designs,” it appears the corporation wants to show it designs more than baseline graphics cards. Given that my card was having trouble keeping it above 60 at the old resolution, I'm expecting somewhere around 40-45fps at 1440.I'm reviewing the “Founders Edition” of the card, which cost $699 ($100 more than the 1080’s starting price). I should probably fire up GTA V at some point, just to see how it runs at 1440. Both of which are.well, let's just say I'm a very happy gamer at the moment. And my new monitor supports both a higher than 60Hz refresh and Gsync. For one, I find the 27" size more immersive than the 24" screen. Most people are probably running at 1080p so going from 1440p will probably result in a greater subjective impact than I experienced.Īll of that said, I am quite happy with my new monitor. My highly subjective and not at all scientific observations on performance hit going from 1200p to 1440p. Dropping a few settings down got me back up to near 90 at 1200p and my eyes can't really tell the difference so, you know. Witcher 3 dropped from about 95-ish average (spiking at a little over 100 at times) fps to 80-ish. This was using the "Very High" setting preset. I did also run the in-game benchmark tool, and that gave me about a 15-25% drop in performance depending on which part of the benchmark we're talking about. Tomb Raider near one of the campfires went from 80-90 fps down to around 60ish fps. Thank you, Gsync for helping me keep my sanity during those spikes and dips! Seems less stable as well, with framerate jumping around more than it did before. At 1440p, I was getting 45-65 fps near the temple and about the same in the Ark. But it ran around 80-85fps in the area around the temple warp point and 100ish in the Ark at 1200p. But I understand that the game is capped at 100fps so it's hard to say what the real impact was as I don't know what my "true" fps was at 1200p.Īgents of Mayhem.OK, probably not the best game to use as a benchmark since everyone knows it's hilariously bad in terms of optimization. Shadow of Mordor ran at 100fps at 1200p down to around 85-90fps at 1440. ![]() But for the most part, it felt like I wasn't taking much of a hit, at least based on my FPS counter. It did seem that in 1440p, I spent more time near the 100fps range then I did at 1200p. This was while running out and about in the wilderness. If anybody out there was curious about what kind of impact upping your resolution will have on gaming, I present my own (highly non scientific) findings for you below.įor reference, I'm running an i5 CPU and GTX 1070, and the games mentioned below (except for Agents of Mayhem) were running at max or near-max settings.īorderlands 2 was barely noticeable in terms of framerate change. Obviously with more pixels to drive, there is a noticeable hit to gaming performance. So I recently upgraded from a 24" to 27" screen (1920x1200 to 2560x1440 resolutions respectively).
